Stories of Redemption: Yvonne Cannaday

Stories of Redemption: Yvonne Cannaday

In this installment of our series, we hear from a long-time precious sister Yvonne Cross Cannaday. Yvonne is a mother, grandmother, and wife and has been a faithful godly follower of Christ for many years.

I was born in 1942 the oldest of 5 children. Our parents took us to Sunday School and church from our early years through our early teen years.

When I was 10 our parents took us to a different church. At that church, they had an “altar call” with each service. I went to the altar after “feeling” a stirring in my heart. I did not know what salvation was all about. I cried and thought that meant that I had been saved, and my parents assumed that I had gotten saved. We did not have devotions at home, nor did we talk about salvation. I was baptized in a lake behind the home of one of the church members. Following that time, when I was about 14 years old, I was asked to teach a Sunday School class for children. We learned memory verses and talked about Bible stories.

We, my husband Chester and I and our children, started going to Mt. Pisgah Baptist Church when I was in my 30’s. Mt. Pisgah was unlike any other church I had ever attended. The people were so friendly! (Mt. Pisgah Baptist was changed to Peachtree Baptist Church in 1999.)

The Jackson’s, Sue and L.B., were especially gracious. We fell in love with the church right away. Another precious couple was Jerry and Carol Lilly. They soon invited us to their home for a meal. I was working at the time and needed a baby sitter for our little boy Brandon. I called Sue Jackson to ask if she knew someone I could trust with our child. God answered prayer when Sue referred me to Carol Lilly.

Carol agreed to keep our son Brandon while I was working. She told me how God had moved in her life. She told me about passages in the Bible that had impressed and encouraged her. Carol and Jerry would sometimes bake cakes for us. In their love and care they were pointing us to God!

After attending Mt. Pisgah Baptist Church for a while, I began to doubt my salvation and had a conference with Bob Doom, Troy Foster, and Pastor David. they asked some questions and gave me godly counsel. On the next Sunday, Pastor Troy was praying with me across the room in a Sunday School room when I became aware of the presence of the Holy Ghost, and salvation was granted to me.

Therefore being justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ.

Romans 5:1

Christ died for sinners. This truth is open to all who believe. Through the years, God has sustained us through many difficult times. Yet He is faithful and just! We praise Him!
